Halloween has grown into a global cultural moment. The spooky fun and outlandish costumes create moments for every age group, and it’s the perfect time for your brand to get involved in some of the rituals your followers love. With so much hype around Halloween it can be difficult to sort the highlights from the horrors, so here’s some tricks to ensure you get the treats you are after:
A spooky sale
Everyone loves a bargain, and Halloween is the perfect time of year to whet the appetite of the bargain-hunters getting a head start on their holiday season shopping. Tease the fence–sitters with an unmissable discount, or reward your subscribers with an exclusive members–only monsteriffic deal!
Don’t have the budget to support a full sale? Kick off your Halloween marketing activities (and ramp up the FOMO factor) with a quick ‘n’ dirty flash sale! Get that countdown going, and let your followers know to grab a bargain before it ghosts!
Invoke the holiday spirit
Halloween wouldn’t be the same without creepy costumes and decorations. Why not decorate your brand as well? Here are some ideas to get you started:
Create a spooky version of your logo
Re-skin your social media pages and profile pictures
Create some creepy Instagram Highlight covers
There are a ton of different ways you can ramp up the scary factor on your brand messaging – you might have noticed some of your favorite apps getting creepy on their App Store pages!
There’s no real limit to what you can do here. Think dripping blood, cobwebs, spiders, go as creepy or as cute as you like! If your brand was a person, what would its Halloween costume be?
Holiday Rituals provide a great opportunity to approach a tired concept in a fresh and unique way. If you can put your own spin on things, it makes your efforts much more memorable, and more likely to stand out from the crowd. A good way to start? Get down to the core of who you are as a brand, and let that shine through in your marketing.
Jack-o’-lanterns pop up everywhere in October, and they make for a really versatile topic for brand engagement. Weave them into your brand narrative by creating some pumpkin themed messaging, like we did with in–app messages and push notifications:
Other options? Record a time lapse tutorial video of a pumpkin carving (bonus points if it’s a really unique or fun design!), make a carving stencil for your followers to print out and use, create a pumpkin–based recipe, or start a conversation with your followers about their favorite Halloween traditions!
Trick or Treating
We all know and love the time–honored tradition of going from house to house, collecting candy (and the sad times when you realize you’re too old for it). But did you know the tradition stems from a much more sombre beginning? Back then, children from poorer families used to go from house to house, begging for kindling, food, and money. Anything they collected would be used to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve.
Why not take a different spin on the tradition and announce a charity sale, with a portion of your Halloween period sales going to a charity of your choice? Or give your Halloween promos some heart and use your platform to help black cats in shelters (who are generally less likely to be adopted) find their forever homes?
Trick or treating is an excellent topic to weave into your Instagram Stories, too. Highlight treats such as sales, spooky merch, and giveaways to delight your followers with that little bit extra. Highlight tricks (of the trade) with a “watch me make this” style tutorial, or trick them with a fun social game. Double down and use Instagram’s native Story options like polls, music, quizzes, stickers and more, to really boost your engagement!
Not into Halloween?
Even if Halloween isn’t the done “thing” where you are, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the change in seasons and get colorful with your graphics! Think warming reds, burnt oranges, and fabulously bright yellows to represent fall. Or for our southern hemisphere friends, spring has officially sprung! Go green, get floral, and make it fabulous.
Witch–ever way you go, there’s no limit to what you can do to make sure Halloween 2019 is your best year yet. Get ready, this one’s gonna be a scream.
