Go retro like an Insta pro

Anyone for a trip down memory lane? The analogue photo effect has been trending for ages, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

@arabella.rollison and @emilyrmenefee are all about this awesome retro look, with muted colors and added grains to give their feed a unique ‘dreamy’ feel.

We reached out to ask how they create this effect in Over, and why they’ve added it to their artistic arsenal.

First up is Arabella Rollison, a content creator based in Indianapolis. Scrolling through her feed will whisk you away to a magical world where the flowers are always in bloom, and the sun never sets. Expertly crafted with graphics and photo effects, Arabella’s creative, adventurous personality shines through in every image.

"I use Over frequently to create my look. You’ll notice a continued color theme, unique edits, lots of movement, and vintage effects. It’s a fun, colorful, retro look!

I use the ‘blend’ and ‘mask’ tools to edit in elements and layers such as light leaks, butterflies, hot air balloons, vintage scratches, graphics; you name it."

"You can create something unique in Over, it’s such a fun way to stand out."

Another self-starter perfecting the retro ‘California’ aesthetic with Over is Emily Rae Manafee, a freelance designer and media gal from Los Angeles. Her feed is awash with crisp-white delight, sunny days, and peachy smiles.

"The colors I use are my current favorites, and I am loving the vintage edits.

I simply take a photo from my gallery and import it into Over. Then, I go to add a graphic, search “dust” or “vintage” and find an overlay that fits my picture, and adjust it to how I want it."

This aesthetic makes my heart happy when I look at it.

Ready to get creative with the vintage photo-effect? It’s easy in Over.

All you need to do is familiarise yourself with the Blend tool, to merge graphics with your image at the touch of a button. This step-by-step video will have you blending like a pro in no time:

And that's all there is to it! Thank you Arabella and Emily for inspiring us with your retro magic.
