Keep it simple with timeless three-color combos

The color spectrum is massive, which is awesome. But it also means choosing palettes for designs can be a bit of a task.

The color spectrum is massive, which is awesome. But it also means choosing palettes for designs can be a bit of a task. S’all good, though, because we’ve simplified the menu.

Today, our specials are three-color combo classics with side orders of tasty tips!

Why three colors? Because they form a limited palette that makes it a breeze to achieve a consistent look while also being super easy on the eye when well selected.

And the combos shown below are go-to, failsafe options you can use for particular themes, including…

Rich & luxurious

Tip: Whether or not you’re working with brand colors, try picking a strong hero color first (eg the blue, below), followed by a secondary color, and an accent shade.

Clean & simple

Tip: Give the 60/30/10 color rule a go – use your main color (eg. the brown, below) on about 60% of the design, then the next color 30% and the last 10%.

Earthy & organic

Tip: Color-picking a dark, medium and light tone from a background image is an easy way to create a three-color palette. You can use the tear-drop Color tool for this.
